Research helps them to find out what might cause various health problems. Studies also let them test new treatments and see how effective current treatments are. Research is the only way of comparing different approaches to preventing and treating illness and health problems. They need evidence to know which treatment work best and what risk factors we should be aware of.
They run a number of studies that are approved by both an NHS ethics committee and the West London Mental Health Trust.
Dementia prevention studies
- PREVENT Research Programme: recruiting volunteers without memory problems aged 40+
- Aim: to identify the risk factors for memory problems and to find the earliest signs of change in the brain that could lead to memory problems.
- TOMMORROW Study: recruiting volunteers without memory problems aged 65 – 83
- Aim: to test whether a licensed medication can help delay the onset of memory problems
Dementia clinical trials
- Merck Prodromal Study: Recruiting people ages 50-85 years with mild cognitive impairment or mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease.
- Aim: to test whether a trial medication can delay the progression of memory problems
- Merck017 Study: Recruiting people aged 50-85 years old with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease. The aim is to trial a new treatment.
