Re-designing Palliative Care services: your feedback on potential scenarios

NHS Central London Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) in collaboration with West London, Hammersmith & Fulham and Brent CCG is sharing its current approach to addressing challenges faced by palliative care services in these areas.

The CCG has proposed some potential scenarios, and is requesting feedback to be shared over the next four weeks. If you would like to share your feedback, please follow the link to this Involvement Document and complete the survey in print or online on the proposed scenarios.

Further information

Since December 2018 the CCG has engaged; local patients, families, carers, residents, the voluntary and community sector and patient representative groups across the four boroughs. A ‘Call for evidence’ was launched to hear local people and professional’s views on services and how they are working. This information formed the basis of an Independent Review by Penny Hansford, who previously worked as Director of Nursing at St Christopher’s Hospice in South London.

Following the publishing of the review findings, three public workshops were held to look at people’s experience of palliative care services; focusing on access, care and the transfer of care and bereavement.

Key themes from these workshops included; care not being the same across boroughs, the need for better care planning and coordination, care that is more appropriate for minority groups and the impact of travel times and costs for friends, family and carers. Full summary report of the three workshops can be found here.

Following the workshops, a patient and public working group was formed with representation from Healthwatch to represent the patient voice on the progression of this programme.

I want to get involved but would like more information around palliative care

The CCG has produced an Information Pack about palliative care, if you would like any definitions added to this pack please let them know via the email details provided.

Next steps?

The results of this engagement period will be presented to CCG governing bodies for consideration of the next steps. This is not a consultation period. Should any recommendations be classed as a ‘substantial’ change to the existing palliative care service by our governing bodies and associated NHS bodies these changes will be subject to a public consultation.

You can sign up to the mailing list to receive email updates on the progress of the palliative care review. The email address to sign up to the mailing list is nwlccgs.triborough.palliativecare@nhs.net.

The Pembridge in-patient unit

The in-patient unit at the Pembridge Palliative Care Centre continues to be suspended whilst this review of services continues. Patients requiring in-patient services will continued to be cared for by an alternative hospice in the area at this time.
